The certification register

Most suppliers in this trade show you a row of certificate images. An image proves nothing. Here are the numbers, the issuing bodies and the expiry dates, which you can check.

What each certificate actually proves

WHO-GMP
That a named manufacturing site has been inspected against WHO Good Manufacturing Practice for the dosage forms listed on the certificate. It is site-specific and form-specific. A WHO-GMP certificate for oral liquids says nothing about a plant's sterile injectable line.
CoPP
The Certificate of Pharmaceutical Product. In WHO format, it confirms that a specific product is licensed in the exporting country and that the manufacturing site complies with GMP. It is the single document most registration authorities will not proceed without.
Free Sale Certificate
That the product is freely sold in the country of origin. Simpler and faster than a CoPP, and accepted in place of one in some markets, mainly for feed supplements and non-medicinal lines.
ISO 9001
That a quality management system exists and is audited. It says nothing about the product. Useful as a signal of process discipline, worthless as a substitute for a drug licence.
GDP
Good Distribution Practice. It covers storage conditions, transport, traceability and the prevention of falsified product entering the chain. For a distributor this is the relevant standard, and it is the one most Indian exporters do not hold.
FSSAI
The Indian food safety registration, which is what feed supplements and pet food are regulated under rather than the drug licence. Two different legal regimes, and buyers routinely ask for the wrong one.
CDSCO
Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation. The national drug regulator, whose registration is required for export of certain categories and whose approval sits behind state-issued licences.
HACCP
Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points. A food-safety system applied to pet food and nutraceutical lines, focused on identifying and controlling hazards at defined points in the process.

Common questions

How do I verify these certificates?

+

Ask us for a scanned copy, which we send on request ahead of a first order, and check the number against the issuing authority. Indian drug licences and WHO-GMP certificates are verifiable with the state Food and Drug Administration. ISO certificates are verifiable through the certification body and, where applicable, the IAF CertSearch database.

Why does a distributor hold GDP rather than GMP?

+

GMP governs manufacture and applies to the plant. Good Distribution Practice governs storage, transport and the integrity of the supply chain, which is what we actually do. Asking a distributor for a GMP certificate is a common and understandable mistake, and a supplier who produces one without explaining whose plant it belongs to is not being straight with you.

Can I get the manufacturers' certificates too?

+

Yes, per plant, on request. We request a current copy from the manufacturer rather than sending a scan from our files, so allow a couple of working days.
