Why companion animal products are where Indian manufacturing got good
Ten years ago sourcing companion animal products from India meant compromising. That is no longer true for most categories, and the reason is a domestic market that became demanding faster than anyone expected.
What changed
Indian veterinary manufacturing grew up around livestock, because that is where the animals and the money were. Companion animal products were an afterthought: a handful of dewormers, some shampoos, and imported brands for anyone who could afford them.
Then urban pet ownership grew very fast, and with it a customer base that reads labels, asks their veterinarian for a specific molecule and complains loudly online. Domestic pet clinics started demanding formulations they had read about in international journals. Manufacturers who had been making the same products for twenty years suddenly had a reason to invest.
The result is that the quality floor rose in exactly the categories where the domestic market became demanding, and stayed where it was in the ones where it did not.
Where it is genuinely strong
- Ectoparasiticides: spot-ons, chews and collars, including the isoxazoline class as patents have lapsed
- Anthelmintics, where India has decades of formulation depth from the livestock side
- Dermatology: medicated shampoos, antifungals, ear cleansers and otic preparations
- Nutraceuticals and supplements, which is the largest single block of our own catalogue
- Oral antibiotics in palatable presentations, an area where Indian formulation work is genuinely good
- Hepatoprotectives and renal support, where Ayurvedic-derived formulations have real domestic evidence and a very low cost base
Where it is still thin
Sterile injectables, particularly lyophilised products, because the number of plants running a properly validated process for the veterinary market is much smaller than the number that say they do. Modified-release oral forms. Metered-dose and device-based products, where tooling investment has not happened. And anything still under patent, for obvious reasons.
Vaccines are a separate story. India has world-scale vaccine capability, but the veterinary biologicals side is concentrated in a few institutions, and cold chain out of India is the constraint rather than manufacturing.
What this means for buying
Judge by category and by plant, not by country. The difference between the best and worst Indian manufacturer of the same product is far larger than the difference between India and anywhere else. That is the entire argument for working with someone who has visited the plants.
It also means the price spread within a single molecule is wide. On any of our molecule pages you will see several manufacturers' versions of the same active at different prices. Some of that spread is strength and pack size. Some of it is a domestic brand premium that means nothing in your market. And some of it is a real difference in the documentation package, which is the part worth paying for if you are filing a registration.
Common questions
Are Indian companion animal products as good as European ones?
+
In the well-established generic categories, from parasiticides to dermatology to nutritional supplements, the better Indian plants are producing to a standard that stands up to comparison. In novel molecules under patent, and in complex sterile or modified-release forms, Europe and the US remain ahead. The honest answer is category by category, not country by country.
Why are Indian pet products so much cheaper?
+
Lower manufacturing overheads, lower regulatory cost, competitive local API supply and a domestic market that will not pay premium prices. Some of the saving is real efficiency and some is a lower regulatory burden, which is exactly why the supplier qualification questions matter.
